An Arab Town

Arcos de la Frontera gets its charm from its location: on a sheer cliff. The fact that the town is situated on top of a cliff makes it very picturesque. From any point of the town you can admire the spectacular views that lie at its feet. Being part of the province of Cadiz makes the town a real example of Arab influence.

The town has been inhabited since prehistory and the Arabs turned it into a defense point. Because it was of great strategic value, it became the capital of a kingdom belonging to the Taifa dinasty. Probably the most beautiful part of the town is its historic center, which is situated between Cuesta de Belen and Puerta Matrona. Puerta Matrona is the gate through which tourists have the access to and from the Arab wall; the wall that used to surround the town as a defense strategy.

The Historic Centre

The historic center is one of the most popular attractions among tourists. In the center of it lies the Plaza del Cabildo. If you want to see some amazing buildings, you are in the right place. Here you will find the Town Hall and the Ducal Castle, which is a Muslim building built in the 12th century by the Arabs which was rebuilt in the 15th century. You can then go to the San Pedro Church, which was built following a Baroque style. On your sightseeing list must be the Basilica of Santa Maria de la Asuncion. This church combines two styles: the Gothis style, and the Plateresque one. Something very special about Arcos de la Frontera is the Palace of the Count of Aguila. The building is seen as a jewel, an excellent example of Gothic style and Mudejar elements.

The cuisine of Arcos de la Frontera is influenced by its main activity: horticulture. The local dishes contain pumpkins, tomato and chickpeas. Arcos de la Frontera is famous for its festivals.
